Home additions, built to last.
By the owner.
More room without moving. Footings, framing, roof, windows, siding, and stairs, built by one contractor from tear-off to final walkthrough, so you're not coordinating a crowd of trades on your own property.

What I Build
Home additions in Cedar Rapids, built from the ground up
Need more room but don't want to move? An addition gives you a new bedroom, family room, office, or sunroom on the house you already love. I handle the whole build myself: tearing out what's failing, setting the posts and footings, framing, roofing, windows, siding, and the stairs to get you in and out.
You get one contractor from the first walkthrough to the final walkthrough, a clear itemized estimate up front, and straight answers the whole way.
Featured Project
From a rotting add-on to a bright new room
The old add-on had failing siding and boarded-up windows. I tore it off and built a brand-new addition in its place.
What went into it
- Tore off the old add-on down to the ground
- 6x6 posts on Diamond Pier footings, cross-braced for strength
- New floor system and Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold subfloor
- Vaulted roof framing for a tall, open room
- New shingle roof tied into the existing house
- House wrap, new windows, white vinyl siding, soffit, and trim
- New pressure-treated stairs

Why Urban Edge
Built right from the ground up
Solid footings, no big dig
An addition is only as good as what holds it up. I set 6x6 posts on Diamond Pier footings and cross-brace them, so there's no full foundation to pour, far less digging, and less mess in your yard.
One contractor, start to finish
Tear-off, framing, roofing, windows, siding, and stairs are all handled by me. You always know who's responsible and who to call.
Clear, itemized estimates
You'll see exactly what's included and what it costs before any work begins, with no vague lump sums.
Ties in clean
The new roof, siding, and trim are matched and tied into your existing house, so the addition looks like it was always there.

Questions
Home addition FAQ
How much does a home addition cost?
It depends on the size of the room, the roof style, and the finishes you choose. I'll walk the site with you and give you a clear, itemized estimate before any work begins, so you know exactly what you're paying for.
Do I need a permit for an addition?
Yes. Additions need a building permit in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding cities. I'll walk you through what's needed so it's sorted out before work starts.
Does an addition need a full foundation?
No. I build additions on 6x6 posts set on Diamond Pier footings, cross-braced for strength. Diamond Piers are precast concrete footings held in place by steel pins driven into the ground, so there's no full foundation to pour and far less digging in your yard.
Can you replace an old porch or add-on that's falling apart?
Yes. That's exactly what my featured project above was: I tore off a rotting add-on and built a solid new addition in its place.
How long does an addition take?
It depends on the size of the addition and the weather. You'll get a realistic schedule with your estimate, and I'll keep you updated as the job moves along.
Where do you build additions?
I'm based in Cedar Rapids and work across Linn and Johnson County, including Marion, Hiawatha, Center Point, Central City, Mount Vernon, North Liberty, Coralville, and Iowa City.

What Customers Say
What Cedar Rapids Homeowners Say About Working With Me
Same owner, same standards on every job — showing up when I say, keeping you in the loop, and finding the right fix. Here's what recent customers had to say.
"We asked Matt if he could get one of our kitchen wall’s updated. He said he could and he did a super job! We were very impressed from beginning to end of the project. He and his work mate did a great job with the wall. He started the job when he said they would and kept in constant contact throughout. Always kept us informed of every step and asked what we wanted at each step. We will definitely contact Urban Edge for our next project."
— Chris D.
"Matt is professional and very personable. Most impressive is the efficiency with which multiple jobs have been completed. Strong work ethic. Highly recommend."
— Kevin D., Cedar Rapids
"Highly recommend Matt and Urban Edge! Our window sills were horribly stained and discolored after multiple winters of condensation from the windows. I was not sure how we were going to fix this quickly and cost effectively but I assumed someone would have to sand and restain each window sill which would be very labor intensive and take a long time. Matt figured out a better way, to reinstall new sills that matched the construction and color of our old ones. He got this done quickly which was very important to us."
