After a Storm Hits Cedar Rapids: What to Check on Your Roof and Siding

Apr 17, 2026

If you've been in Eastern Iowa long enough, you already know how fast the weather can turn. One afternoon it's calm, and by evening you're watching golf ball-sized hail bounce off the driveway. We've had some significant storms roll through the Cedar Rapids area recently, and my phone has been busy — which tells me a lot of homeowners are trying to figure out what they're actually dealing with after a storm like that.

So here's what I look at when I walk a property after a hail event, and what you should know before you call anyone — including me.

First: Don't Go on the Roof Yourself

Sometimes that's the first instinct — grab a ladder and go look. But a storm-damaged roof can have compromised decking, soft spots, or slippery shingles that aren't obvious from the ground. Let a contractor get up there. I've done hundreds of post-storm inspections and I can walk a roof safely and tell you exactly what I'm seeing.

What you can do from the ground is check a few things that will tell you a lot before anyone climbs up.

What to Look For After a Hail Storm

On the Roof

The most common sign of hail damage on asphalt shingles is what's called a "bruise" — a soft spot where the granules have been knocked off the surface of the shingle. From the ground, look for dark spots or patches that look different from the rest of the shingle. If you have a newer roof, damaged areas may appear shiny or bare where the granule coating is gone.

Check your gutters and downspouts too. After a significant hail event, you'll often find granule buildup collecting in the gutters — that's a clear sign the shingles took a hit. Dented gutters and fascia are also common and visible from the ground.

Flashing around chimneys, vents, and valleys is another area I pay close attention to. Hail impact on metal flashing can create small dents that eventually allow water intrusion.

On the Siding

Vinyl siding tells the story clearly — hail will crack or dent it, and once vinyl cracks, it needs to be replaced. The damage isn't always dramatic, but even small cracks can let moisture behind the wall over time.

On fiber cement or wood siding, look for chipping, paint loss, or dings. These are less obvious but just as real.

Check window screens and trim too. Dented aluminum trim and torn screens are easy indicators that the storm had enough force to cause damage — if screens are damaged, your siding likely took a hit as well.

Should You File an Insurance Claim?

That depends on what the inspection finds and what your deductible looks like. Here's what I tell homeowners:

If the damage is clearly hail-related and widespread — multiple areas of the roof showing bruising, siding damage on the exposed sides of the house — it's usually worth filing a claim. Insurance companies are familiar with these events in Iowa and will send an adjuster.

If the damage is minimal or isolated, weigh it against your deductible. A small repair that costs less than your deductible isn't worth filing a claim that could affect your premium.

What I'd caution against is making that call before getting an honest inspection. I've seen homeowners assume everything is fine because the roof isn't actively leaking — only to find out six months later they have moisture damage that's been building since the storm.

Watch Out for Storm Chasers

After any major storm event in the Cedar Rapids area, contractors from out of state start showing up door to door. Some are legitimate. A lot of them aren't.

Signs to be cautious about: they ask you to sign something before the inspection is done, they pressure you to decide on the spot, they ask to be listed as your public adjuster, or they have no local address or reviews you can actually verify.

I'm based in Cedar Rapids. I've been doing this for 15 years. You can find me on Google, call me directly, and I'll give you a straight answer on what your roof and siding actually need — not what generates the biggest claim.

Get an Inspection Before You Do Anything Else

If your home took a hit in a recent storm, the first step is a simple inspection — no commitment, no pressure. I'll walk the exterior, get on the roof if needed, and give you an honest read on what's there. If it's fine, I'll tell you that. If it's not, I'll show you exactly what I'm seeing and talk through your options.
